Brandywell Stadium - Derry City FC

When visiting my wife's friend (literally) just over the border in Co. Donegal, I decided to leave them chatting and head into Derry/Londonderry (we cater for all preferences on this blog.....make your own jokes). On the way into town I stopped in the Bogside/Brandywell area to take some photos. You can stick your murals I was more interested in the footy ground.

Like many Northern Irish grounds, the stadium gets used for other purposes. The Brandywell is a community stadium and also host regular Greyhound races.

Derry's ground resides in Northern Ireland, but City resigned from the Northern Irish league back in the 70s after security concerns meant that opposing teams were unable/unwilling to play games at The Brandywell. Despite opposing club lifting these objections the following season, the security forces retained their concerns over teams and fans (more often than not coming from the other side of the social/religious divided) visiting the then volatile area surrounding the ground. Having withdrawn from the league, the club spent the next 13 years in junior football before joining the newly formed LOI in 1985/86 where they have played happily and, for the most part, pretty successfully ever since.

The unglamourous club shop.

The old main enclosure.

The oval stadium with greyhound track.

A nearby mural in support of both City and the Gaelic footballers.
